I have worked as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and Craniosacral Therapy practitioner since 1999 and have a background in childhood development, kinesiology and body mechanics. Over the years I have taken many amazing classes, but I learned my most useful lessons when I had my own child.
My daughter Delilah was a very fussy, colicky baby who was happy only when I was holding her and bouncing vigorously. I could barely put her down for the first 7 months, so I really needed to find something comfortable for the both of us that I could hold her in all the time.
I was already a believer in baby wearing as a tool for promoting bonding and closeness, but Delilah did not like the baby slings I tried. After a couple months, my body was killing me from using the Baby Bjorn. I borrowed a friend’s baby wrap and Delilah and I both loved it. It was way too expensive so I decided to make one myself. I experimented with different fabrics and patterns and came up with what I feel are some big improvements on the design of my friend’s sling.
I started making Snugglewrap baby carriers for all of my friends who seemed to be entering the baby-making stage of their lives at the same time. People would stop them on the street, at the doctor’s office, on a hike — and ask where they got that cool-looking baby carrier. I started getting phone calls from all over the country asking for my baby carriers and before I knew it, I started a business.
It feels great to be selling something I whole-heartedly love and believe in. The Snugglewrap baby carrier rescued my family, so I have no problem passionately promoting them. I feel everyone with a baby should have one!
The Snugglewrap baby carrier is made out of 95% Cotton and 5% Lycra. The little bit of stretch in the fabric makes it incredibly comfortable to wear. It conforms nicely to the curves of your body and gently cradles your baby’s body. It combines a snug fit with the feeling of freedom.
The edges of the Snugglewrap baby carrier are not stitched. They are simply cut and left unfinished; making it lighter and less bulky to wear. The knit material naturally curls at the edges in a beautiful way. So I thought to myself, why mess with a good thing?
The Snugglewrap baby carrier is great for your body and for your baby’s body. Unlike some baby slings that are worn over one shoulder, the Snugglewrap baby carrier evenly distributes weight over both shoulders and across your entire back. The shoulder straps go all the way across your shoulders and down your arms to spread the weight evenly and prevent uncomfortable pressure on your shoulders that comes from narrow straps.
Newborn babies have very delicate hip joints and a growing spine. Baby slings and carriers that have a seat where babies legs hang out the sides often can splay babies hips in unnatural ways and put lots of pressure on the baby’s tailbone. Because all babies are different shapes and sizes, it’s hard to fit every baby to a standard sized holder.
The Snugglewrap baby carrier custom fits to your baby’s body by cradling the baby’s pelvis and holding the legs in a comfortable, flexed position. Studies have shown that this is optimal for their development.
As babies grow, they develop more muscle tone in their legs and upper bodies and can support more of their own weight. This increased muscle tone helps them hold up their head, use their arms and legs with more control and generally hold more of their body weight. Once they are holding their head up on their own (around 3-4 months), it’s safe to face them out in the Snugglewrap baby carrier and let their legs dangle. They love to look out at the world while still feeling safely close to you!
As a Craniosacral Therapy practitioner, I have worked with many colicky babies. Most baby slings tend to put the baby in a very flexed and bent position, which adds extra pressure on the abdomen and increases discomfort. The Snugglewrap baby carrier holds each baby in an upright posture and provides tummy-to-tummy contact, both of which ease digestion and help reduce fussiness.
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique that is successful in treating colic, breastfeeding difficulties, and postpartum depression. I recommend every baby receive a few CranioSacral Therapy sessions.
